The chess scene in the Northeast is buzzing with excitement
as the North-East Team Chess Championship 2024 approaches. Organized by the Sikkim
Chess Association, this prestigious event will take place from 16th to 19th
October 2024 at Janta Bhawan, near Paljor Stadium in Gangtok, Sikkim. With a
staggering prize pool of ₹5,00,000, this tournament is set to attract some of
the finest chess talent from the region.
The championship will follow a round-robin format, ensuring
that each team faces a diverse range of competition over the four-day event.
The stakes are high, with the Champion Team set to win ₹2,00,000, while the
second and third-place teams will take home ₹1,50,000 and ₹1,00,000,
respectively. This event marks a significant step toward promoting and
strengthening chess in the Northeastern region, encouraging players to hone
their skills and compete at the highest level.
The spotlight is now on Team Assam, which has already
announced its lineup. Led by two of Assam’s finest, International Master (IM)
Mayank Chakraborty and IM Sahil Dey, the team is geared up for a strong
performance. Both Mayank and Sahil hail from Guwahati and have made a name for
themselves on the national and international chess scene. Joining them are Mrinmoy
Rajkhowa, Tanmay Rajbongshi (both from Guwahati), and Abhas R Saikia from
Dibrugarh. This lineup, blending seasoned experience with youthful energy, has
raised high hopes for Assam’s prospects in the tournament.
With top talent converging on Gangtok for this grand event,
chess enthusiasts from across the Northeast are eagerly anticipating the fierce
competition ahead. The North-East Team Chess Championship 2024 promises to be
